Predicting the top expat destinations 20 years into the future is essentially an impossibility. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a fun exercise! And, to be fair, based on some existing trends in economics, climate change, geopolitics, and technological advancements, we can generally begin to piece together where in the world (and why) expats will be going in the year 2045.

According to numerous studies, top expat destinations will be those that balance affordability, safety, climate resilience, and digital accessibility. The rise of AI, automation, and decentralized work will allow expats to choose countries based more on lifestyle rather than job location.

With that in mind, here are five emerging or evolving expat hotspots that could gain prominence over the next couple of decades and the key factors that will play into that forecast.

1. Canada

Climate Resilience: While some regions may experience colder winters, Canada will remain relatively stable compared to areas prone to extreme heat and rising sea levels.

Quality of Life: Already a top destination for skilled workers, Canada’s strong economy, universal healthcare, and political stability will continue attracting expats.

Tech and Green Innovation Hub: Major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal will continue to lead in AI, biotech, and renewable energy.

2. Uruguay

Political and Economic Stability: Often called the “Switzerland of South America,” Uruguay has strong institutions and a low corruption index.

A Sustainability Leader: Already running almost entirely on renewable energy, it will attract climate-conscious expats.

Digital Nomad-Friendly: Uruguay has a stable economy, relatively low taxes, and growing tech sectors.

3. South Korea

Advanced Infrastructure & Tech: With rapid developments in AI, smart cities, and 6G technology, South Korea will be a hub for digital nomads and high-skilled professionals.

Healthcare & Safety: World-class healthcare and one of the lowest crime rates make it attractive for long-term stays.

Culture & Work-Life Shift: As the country moves toward more work-life balance, cities like Busan and Jeju Island may become top spots for remote workers.

4. Indonesia (Bali & Jakarta 2.0)

Smart Cities & Relocation Plans: Indonesia is already planning to move its capital from Jakarta to Nusantara due to environmental concerns. This shift will bring new opportunities.

Bali’s Digital Nomad Boom: Already a hotspot, Bali’s infrastructure will improve significantly, making it even more attractive.

Economic Growth: Indonesia is projected to become one of the top 5 global economies by 2050.

5. Estonia

A Pioneering Digital Society: Estonia already leads in e-governance, and by 2045, it may be the go-to place for digital-first citizens.

Green & Sustainable: With a focus on eco-friendly cities and strong public healthcare, it will appeal to environmentally conscious expats.

Remote Work Paradise: Estonia’s digital nomad visa was one of the first, and it will likely continue expanding its expat-friendly policies.

Bonus Potential Picks

And because we didn’t go out on enough of a limb with those picks, here are another four countries we think could vie for top digital nomad destinations in 2045.

    •    Argentina (if its economic stability improves)

    •    Rwanda (the fastest-growing economy in Africa, and an emerging tech hub)

    •    Kazakhstan (Central Asia’s rising star, and a strategic trade hub)

    •    New Zealand (climate resilience, plus a high quality of life)
